Closing the Gap
A Better future through preparation, Education, & vocation. Closing the Gap is a program initiated to help the youth in our community with limited resources to pursue a better future through Preparation, Education, and Vocation. Closing the Gap utilizes programs already being implemented by the Sacramento County Office of Education and the Sacramento Police Foundation. Preparation Preparation deals with the development of students while they are still in high school. Closing the Gap is fostering student’s growth and increasing their potential to succeed by its involvement in several programs that provide this guidance; the Magnet Academies, which provide college counseling and SAT preparation courses; and Project S.A.V.E. There are currently 15 students from Grant Union, Hiram Johnson, JFK, and Sacramento High School enrolled in the Magnet Academies that offer a criminal justice education and career path for its students. The SAT preparatory program allows each student to work with a college counselor once a week by phone to review curriculum, extra curricular activities, as well as undergo a thorough SAT prep course. Project S.A.V.E. served 112 participants in 2007 year and is an early intervention program for adolescent first time offenders who have been involved in violence or weapons possession Education Education is enabled for the students through scholarships to attend local community colleges and state universities. While the state does provide financial aid there are still many students who do not qualify for assistance and cannot afford to attend college. With Closing the Gap’s assistance, the Magnet Academy has funded 15 scholarships for students to attend the SAT prep course work and put forth $25 thousand towards college scholarships to graduating students to pursue a college education. Through Closing the Gap we fund scholarships for these students to attend college as well as covering the expense of books. Vocation Vocation is offered through internships for college students and new graduates. These internships provide an opportunity for students to earn wages while at the same time gaining valuable work experience. In High School, students participate in the program as Public Service Aids; in College, the students become Student Trainees. In addition, internships can serve as the vehicle to securing full time employment and the necessary experience for advancement in the work force. Closing the Gap focuses on these three steps Preparation, Education, and Vocation to provide youth with the necessary tools to become successful. Please join in our efforts to build a better Sacramento and educate our youth. Contact Katie Dahl
