Remembering the 9/11 tragedy

A Call for Unity is an anniversary event of the September 11th tragedy. In 2002, the Sacramento News & Review and the Interfaith Service Bureau presented the first annual A Call for Unity event on September 11th, 2002. People came together for a night of peace, remembrance and commemoration of the diversity of our communities. More than 3000 people from numerous faiths and ethnicities found common enjoyment in music, song and shared words of peace and understanding.

In a continuation of celebrating the spirit and commonality found within our humanity, every year A Call for Unity will present the extraordinary range and depth of multicultural music of Sacramento's interfaith community. The performances will range from the very traditional to the very progressive presented in many languages, all celebrating spirit.

A Call for Unity is a celebration of our community's unity despite our interfaith differences. Out of the September 11th tragedy came a Call for Unity, and from that call emerged our response – Building Unity.

Over the past two years, the proceeds from A Call for Unity have supported the building and refurbishing of homes in Oak Park through the ‘Building Unity’ initiative. In concert with the Interfaith Service Bureau, Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together and many other faith-based, non-profit, community, government and corporate partners, Building Unity is working to create safe affordable housing in one of Sacramento’s most underserved neighborhoods.
